Paul - the Duc de Chaucigny-Varennes - has escaped France, fleeing from it as the fires of revolution sweep through his home country. With him is the beautiful Melanie, a young girl that he passes off as his ward, and the daughter of a friend whose life was claimed by vengeful revolutionaries. The truth is that she is but a dance hall singer that he plans to marry to a wealthy suitor, securing a fortune and social status. And so, as he sets his plans in motion and other actors come to the fore, long-hidden secrets emerge, while others vie for the attention of both Melanie and Paul.
