As the 19th century draws to a close Jane and Robert Marryot ring in the new year - and the turn of the century - with the same tradition that they always have. With a glass of punch each and a toast at midnight, the Marryots and their family look to the coming century eagerly, their minds rife with the possibilities and opportunities that await them in the years to come. None of them could even begin to imagine the horrors that would grip the world, however, or the tragedies that would befall both them and the ones that they hold dear.
