Dissatisfied with his position running a paper-box factory for his father-in-law, Dan Brooks devotes his time and his resources into training his prize horse Broadway Bill, in hopes of returning to the far more exciting world of horse racing. Despite how fervently Brooks pursues his dreams, and despite how unfulfilled the position at the humdrum old factory has left him, his father-in-law demands that he abandon his efforts and instead return his attention to running the factory. Unwilling to do so, Brooks resigns from his position and leaves his home of Higginsville behind, taking Broadway Bill with him to chase his true calling.
