Frank X. Farrell is known for more than just his baseball skills - his insistence on making excuse for any little mishap or misjudgement is so prominent that it even earns him the nickname "Alibi Ike." Even his sweetheart Dolly can't stand his habit of offering up excuses, and when she finally reaches her limit, she walks out on him. Left vulnerable and in a slump, a group of opportunistic gamblers decide to try to take advantage of the situation, and close in on Frank with a proposition - that he throw the World Series so that they can rake in the profits.
