Andy "Champ" Purcell's time as the world heavyweight champion has long since ended. Every effort he makes to get back on his feet and train for the ring once more is hamstrung by his crippling alcoholism, and what few efforts show any degree of promise are again destroyed by his addiction to gambling. Even the urging of his young son to better himself are met with little more than broken promises, and the two are forced to languish in a squalid Tijuana hovel, eking out a meagre living and scraping by. The arrival of a familiar face from Champ's past promises to change their lot in life - though not even Champ knows if he has the strength to see it through.
