A chance meeting on a frigid Indiana day brings Hannah, a peddler eking out a meagre living going door to door and selling apple peelers, to the Ward household. The kindly couple insist that she come in and warm herself up, despite their own financial struggles, and Hannah offers them domestic help in exchange for room and board. There, Hannah helps the Wards with their everyday lives, whether it is cooking, cleaning, or simply lending a listening ear in troubled times - and slowly, but surely, the stranger that the Wards brought into their homes begins to change all of their lives for the better.
