Despite his wife Sarah's protests, Kansas farmer Yates Martin moves her, his son and himself to Colarado to search for gold. Their efforts don't yield much at first, but with a combination of Sarah's prudent wisdom and a few strokes of good luck, yates manages to strike upon the second-best thing: silver. Emboldened by this sudden influx of money, renown, and resources, Yates refuses to rest on his laurels. It isn't long before - against his wife's advice - begins drawing up plans to advance his social status even further, and increase his wealth even further, even if it means that he risks falling foul of his own avarice...
